History of New Lisbon, Wisconsin
New Lisbon began as a Ho-Chunk gathering place and river access point on the Lemonweir River. The Ho-Chunk name, anglicized as Wa Du Shuda, means “where canoes are placed,” and lives on in the city’s annual Wa Du Shuda Days festival. After the U.S. acquired the land by treaty in 1836, loggers arrived and built a sawmill that became the center of a growing village. The settlement was first called Mill Haven, then renamed New Lisbon, likely after Lisbon, Ohio, the hometown of an early county clerk. It was incorporated in 1870.
When the La Crosse & Milwaukee Railroad arrived in 1857, New Lisbon became a busy hub where road, rail, and river traffic met. Just south of the city, the Gee’s Slough Mound Group at Indian Mounds Park preserves effigy, conical, and linear mounds built by Woodland Culture people, ancestors of the Ho-Chunk. The site has been on the National Register of Historic Places since 1978 and is maintained by the New Lisbon Lions Club.
Today, Heritage Park features an 1897 Civil War monument, a historic cannon, and a restored horse trough that once served downtown. The New Lisbon Memorial Library displays much of local pharmacist and amateur archaeologist Harry A. Mortensen’s nationally recognized collection of prehistoric Native American artifacts. The Henry and Barbara Bierbauer House (1869) at 970 S. Monroe Street, an Italianate mansion built for the founder of the New Lisbon Brewery and later mayor, was added to the National Register in 2016.
