Lyndon Station is a small village in southeastern Juneau County, about 15 minutes from both Wisconsin Dells and Castle Rock Lake, with its own exit on I-90/94. Settled around 1850 by families from County Kildare, Ireland, the village still shows its Irish heritage with a shamrock on its water tower. The 53944 ZIP code also covers the surrounding Towns of Lyndon and Kildare, so buyers here find in-village homes, rural acreage, and wooded lots close to the Wisconsin River, along with a highly ranked local elementary school and the annual Parkfest celebration each July.
History of Lyndon Station, Wisconsin
According to the village’s historical account, the first settlers arrived in 1849: three brothers and two sisters named Havey from County Kildare, Ireland. The surrounding township was named Kildare in their honor in 1850. When the Chicago, Milwaukee & St. Paul Railroad came through in 1857, it fixed the location of the village, which was then also called Kildare.
Around 1860, residents moved to rename the village to avoid confusion with the township, especially as new settlers arrived from County Limerick. The village became Lyndon Station. Local tradition says a man named Lyndon helped complete the railroad, but records don’t confirm a direct connection, so the origin of the name remains a local mystery. Lyndon Station was officially incorporated as a village in 1903.
Irish Catholic settlers established St. Bridget’s parish in 1851. It was renamed St. Mary’s, and the current church was built in 1899. Locally it’s described as the “mother church” of the Dells area, and the parish once ran a parochial school for surrounding rural families. When passenger rail ended, I-90/94 and Highway 12/16 took over the same role, and Lyndon Station evolved into a quiet bedroom community and service stop on the Dells corridor.
